UNIVERSAL ACCEPTANCE DAY 2023 SRI LANKA

Sri Lanka celebrated ICANN’s Global Universal Acceptance Day 2023 at the outdoor bay area of the Lotus Tower on the 28th of March between 5 PM to  8 PM.

ICANN delegated two Internationalized Domain Names dot-Lanka and dot-Illangai, in Sinhala and Tamil, respectively, to Sri Lanka in 2011, making it one of the first countries to have Non-Latin country code Top Level Domain Names (ccTLDs). Although Sri Lanka has had these two Domain Names for twelve years, most people were reluctant to use them due to not having Sinhala and Tamil easily usable keyboards, etc. With the introduction of user-friendly keyboards for keying Sinhala and Tamil, ICANN wants to popularize the two Domain Names under the Universal Acceptance local initiative project.

The event became a very fun-filled evening with Street Drama and Music. Prof. Emeritus in Sinhala J. B. Dissanayake, Mr. Mahesh Perera, CEO ICTA, Mr. Champika Wijayatunga, Regional Manager for Asia for training at ICANN and Mr. Harsha Wijayawardhana, COO Theekshana, and ICANN Project lead for Local Initiative spoke at the event.  Dr. Ruvan Weerasinghe, chairman of Theekshana delivered the vote of thanks.

2023 වසරේ ICANN හි ගෝලීය විශ්ව සම්මුති දිනය, ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ දී  මාර්තු මස  28 වන දින සවස 5 සිට රාත්‍රී 8 දක්වා නෙළුම් කුලුන එළිමහන් පරිශ්‍රයේ දී අති උත්කර්ෂවත් අයුරින් සමරන ලදී. අයිකැන් (ICANN or Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ) මගින් Root Domain Name Service Servers (DNS) ක්‍රියාත්මක කරන අතර සාමාන්‍ය  වසම් නාම (Top Level Domains or gTLD) සහ  ජාත්‍යන්තර වසම් නාම (Internationalized Domain Names —IDN)   ආදිය පැවරීම ආදී කටයුතුවල වගකීම දරයි.

CANN විසින් 2011 වසරේ දී ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට පිළිවෙළින් සිංහල සහ දෙමළ භාෂාවෙන්  “.ලංකා” සහ “.இலங்கை” යන ජාත්‍යන්තර වසම් නාම දෙකක් පවරන ලදී. එමගින් ලතින් නොවන  කේත භාවිත, Top Level Domain Names (ccTLDs) ඇති පළමු රටවලින් එකක් බවට ශ්‍රී ලංකාව පත් විය. ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට වසර දොළහක් තිස්සේ මෙම වසම් නාම දෙක තිබුණද, සිංහල සහ දෙමළ පහසුවෙන් භාවිත කළ හැකි යතුරුපුවරු ආදිය නොමැතිකම නිසා බොහෝ අය ඒවා භාවිත කිරීමට මැලි වූහ. සිංහල සහ දෙමළ යතුරු ලිවීම සඳහා පරිශීලක හිතකාමී (user friendly) යතුරුපුවරු හඳුන්වාදීමත් සමඟ  විශ්වසම්මුති දේශීය ආරම්භක ව්‍යාපෘතිය යටතේ වසම් නාම  ජනප්‍රිය කිරීමට ICANNහට අවශ්‍ය විය.

මෙම උත්සවය වීදි නාට්‍ය සහ සංගීතයෙන් ඉතා විනෝදයෙන් පිරුණු සන්ධ්‍යාවක් බවට පත් විය. මෙම අවස්ථාවේදී සිංහල භාෂාව පිළිබඳ සම්මානිත මහාචාර්ය J. B. දිසානායක, ICTA හි ප්‍රධාන විධායක නිලධාරී මහේෂ් පෙරේරා, ICANN හි පුහුණුව සඳහා ආසියාවේ කලාපීය කළමනාකරු චම්පික විජයතුංග සහ තීක්ෂණ R&D හි ප්‍රධාන විධායක නිලධාරී සහ ICANN ව්‍යාපෘති ප්‍රධානී දේශීය මුල පිරීමේ ප්‍රධානී හර්ෂ විජයවර්ධන යන මහත්වරු මෙහිදී අදහස් දැක්වූහ. තීක්ෂණ R&D ආයතනයේ සභාපති ආචාර්ය රුවන් වීරසිංහ මහතා ස්තුති කතාව සිදු කළේය.
