UNIVERSAL ACCEPTANCE, EMAIL ADDRESS INTERNATIONALIZATION AND SINHALA UNICODE POLICYMAKERS’ MEETING AND WORKSHOP – 2024

The Policy Workshop on Universal Acceptance (UA) and Email Address Internationalization (EAI) organized by Theekshana R&D under ICANN’s Local Initiative Project was held on 29th February, 2024 at Galle Face Hotel.
Dr. Dharmasri Kumaratunga, Secretary to the Ministry of Technology and senior government officials from various ministries with other stakeholder organizations such as FITIS, LK Domain Registry, and local experts participated to the workshop and the roundtable discussion.
Mr. Samiran Gupta, Vice President of Government and IGO Engagement Asia Pacific & Stakeholder Engagement, South Asia of ICANN, presented remotely with Mr. Champika Wijayatunga, Regional Technical Manager.
The welcome address was done by Dr. Ruvan Weerasinghe, chairman of Theekshana followed by the introduction to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names (ICANN) by Mr. Samiran Gupta, Vice President of Government and IGO Engagement Asia Pacific & Stakeholder Engagement, South Asia of ICANN, and the introduction to LK Domain Registry, .LK Domain and two Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), by Prof. Gihan Dias, CEO & Director of LK Domain Registry.
The maintenance on the Sinhala and Tamil Unicode charts, UA-compliant Sinhala and Tamil – Email Servers and websites, Sri Lanka’s involvement in ISO and Unicode Consortium work, were presented by Mr. Harsha Wijayawardhana, Chair of ICANN funded Local Initiative Project, Local Language Working Group (LLWG).
The process of encoding new characters in the Unicode was further discussed during the workshop.
